Biography

Raphaële is an Assistant Professor in the Materials Department at UC Santa Barbara. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 2016, supervised by Prof. Clare Grey. She then pursued a postdoc at UC Berkeley, under the guidance of Prof. Gerbrand Ceder. Her research interests include the development and implementation of ex situ and operando methods for the study of ion transport and electrochemical processes in solid electrolytes and electrodes, with an emphasis on magnetic resonance spectroscopy and first principles calculations.

Research

Our research endeavors to elucidate the structure-property relationships in electrochemical materials used, for instance, in rechargeable batteries. Our approach encompasses the synthesis and electrochemical testing of electrode/electrolyte materials, as well as the in-depth investigation of structural and electronic phenomena taking place during normal battery function. For this, we are developing novel magnetic resonance techniques, including high resolution paramagnetic solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, operando electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and operando magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in combination with first principles methods to facilitate the interpretation of the experimental data.
