Deborah Fygenson is a founding member of the Center for Bioengineering (CBE) at UCSB and helped establish the optional graduate emphasis it administers, which will serve as a model for the emphasis in Quantum Science and Technology to be established by this NRT. Fygenson adapted a suite of five laboratory modules for remote instruction that explore the phenomenological underpinnings of quantum mechanics. Even post-COVID, remotely operated modules and video lectures will enable dissemination to partner institutions and the general public. She teaches a graduate survey course in Bionanotechnology, topics from which will be incorporated into the NRT curriculum, and spearheaded UCSB’s collaboration with the Center for Nanoscience (CeNS) in Munich, Germany, to offer an international graduate exchange program, the Junior Nanotech Network.
